Permethrin Information:
What is permethrin?
Permethrin is essentially a pesticide that is used to control insects that damage agriculture, wood products, clothing, pets, and humans. It works by killing lice, mites, and other arthropods by disturbing their cell membranes to cause nervous system paralysis which ultimately kills the pests. Permethrin is made into a medication in the form of a cream or lotion that is safe for use on human skin. This medication usually kills lice and scabies mites after just one or two applications. The cream is used for treatment on skin while the lotion is used for the hair and scalp.
How do I use permethrin?
To use permethrin cream to treat scabies, apply a thin layer of the medication over the entire body of the affected individual starting at the neck. Cover all areas including the spaces between the toes and the soles of the feet. You may need to use the entire tube. Avoid putting permethrin cream on the face. The cream is for external use only. Do not get this medication in your eyes, nose, ears, or vagina. Leave the cream on the skin for 8 to 14 hours at a time. Then, wash the cream off thoroughly in the shower. If 14 days have passed, and you see live scabies mites again, repeat the process.
To use permethrin lotion, wash the hair with shampoo. Do not use conditioner. Then towel-dry the hair. Shake the bottle of lotion well. Then cover your eyes with a towel and apply the medication to the entire scalp and hair. Be sure to cover the back of the neck and behind the ears. Cover every strand of hair. Ask for help if needed to avoid getting the medication in your eyes. Keep the lotion in your hair for ten minutes after completing the application. Then rinse your hair and scalp with warm water over a sink. Do not get this medication in the bath tub. Towel-dry the hair again, and then comb it out. Use a lice comb if desired to be sure and remove any remnants of dead lice. If seven days pass and you see a live louse, repeat the process.
After using this medication to treat either lice or scabies, wash and sanitize all clothing, hats, sheets, pillowcases, towels, or anything else the skin has made contact with where mites could reside. Be sure to wash items used in the hair if this product was used to kill lice. Wash everything with soap and very hot water.

What are the possible side effects of using permethrin?
Possible side effects include redness, itching, or skin rash and a mild burning or stinging sensation where permethrin cream or lotion has been applied. Call your doctor immediately if there is severe burning, stinging or swelling at the site of application. If you see signs of allergic reaction, remove the medication at once and get medical attention.
What if I forget to take a dose of permethrin?
In most cases, permethrin does not require multiple doses to treat lice and scabies. If lice return after 7 days, consult a doctor about repeating another dose. If scabies mites return after 14 days, consider consulting your doctor to talk about additional treatment options or another dose of permethrin for scabies mite treatments
How do I store permethrin?
Store permethrin cream or lotion in its original container at a temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
