Novacort Information:
What is Novacort?
Novacort is a topical gel that combines an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, hydrocortisone acetate, with a local anesthetic, pramoxine. It is most frequently prescribed to treat the itching and inflammation of hemorrhoids, but it may also be used to treat similar symptoms of minor skin conditions including eczema, allergic reactions, insect bites, or minor burns. Hydrocortisone acetate works to reduce inflammation, while pramoxine blocks pain signals between nerves and the brain.
How do I use Novacort?
Novacort is a topical gel that is applied to an inflamed area. The amount used and the frequency of application will depend on the condition, its severity, and your doctor’s recommendation. Wash and dry your hands and the area being treated before applying, then gently massage the prescribed amount into the affected area; a sterile applicator may be used if applying the medication to treat hemorrhoids. Thoroughly wash and dry your hands after using this medication. Contact your doctor if your condition does not improve, it worsens, or an infection develops.
Before using Novacort, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to hydrocortisone acetate or pramoxine or any of the ingredients in Novacort
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have, or have had, a rectal infection or sore
- You have an immune system disorder
- You have liver disease
- You have glaucoma
- You have diabetes
- You have a circulation disorder
- You have a stomach or intestinal disorder
What are the possible side effects of using Novacort?
Side minor effects have been reported at the application site by some patients after using Novacort, including irritation, redness, burning, dry or cracked skin, acne, itching, changed skin color, swelling, stinging, and pain. If these symptoms appear, monitor them and report to your doctor if they linger or do not improve. Immediate medical attention is needed if signs of an allergic reaction appear or there is an infection or bleeding at the treatment site.
What if I forget to take a dose of Novacort?
If your doctor has you on a dosing schedule and you miss a dose, apply Novacort as soon as you remember and are able, unless the time is near for the next scheduled dose. In this situation, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount used or change the frequency of use to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Novacort?
Keep Novacort tightly sealed in its original tube, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused amount according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Novacort?
Novacort is for external use only. If this medication is accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Novacort is for topical use only; do not eat or swallow it. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Do not allow this medication to come in contact with the eyes or mucus membranes. Stop using Novacort and contact your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
