Golytely Information:
What is GoLYTELY?
As a laxative, GoLYTELY helps clear the bowel before a colonoscopy by causing diarrhea. It increases water in the intestinal tract, which leads to watery bowel movements. By cleaning the colon, this medication makes it easier for a doctor to view the inside of the colon during your procedure.
How do I take GoLYTELY?
Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for taking the GoLYTELY drug, and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Your doctor will likely instruct you to fill a jug of GoLYTELY powder with water up to the 1 gallon mark. Start quickly drinking 8 ounces of the mixture every 10 minutes at the time your doctor tells you to begin (usually the day before your scheduled colonoscopy). Your first watery bowel movement will likely to occur within an hour of starting your medication, and you should continue taking GoLYTELY until your bowel movements are clear of solids.
Before taking GoLYTELY, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other electrolyte solutions, or you have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have bowel problems, such as an obstruction, severe constipation, or a perforated bowel
- You have ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon
- You have heart or kidney disease
- You have a stomach or digestive disorder
- You have difficulty swallowing
- You currently have nausea or vomiting
- You have low sodium levels
- You have a history of seizures
- You have recently consumed alcohol
What are the possible side effects of taking GoLYTELY?
GoLYTELY may cause mild stomach cramps, bloating, or gas. Other possible side effects include mild nausea, increased hunger or thirst, dizziness, or feeling cold. These side effects will likely subside on their own, but if you have any adverse effects that persist or get worse, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor right away if you have any unlikely but serious side effects, including nausea, vomiting, difficulty drinking liquids, infrequent urination, fever, rectal bleeding, gagging, or choking. You should also contact your doctor if you haven’t had a bowel movement within two hours of starting your first GoLYTELY dose.
What if I forget to take a dose of GoLYTELY?
GoLYTELY is usually only taken for one day before a colonoscopy, so forgetting a dose is not likely to be an issue. If you do forget to use this medication when you are supposed to, contact your doctor, as you may need to reschedule your procedure.
How do I store GoLYTELY?
Keep the unmixed GoLYTELY powder in its original container at room temperature. Once you have mixed the medicine, keep the jug upright in your refrigerator. Throw any leftover mixed medicine away after 48 hours. If you’re not sure how to safely dispose of this medicine, talk to your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on GoLYTELY?
It is unlikely that you will experience serious side effects from overdosing on GoLYTELY, but if you are concerned that you have taken too much of this medicine, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do.
Warnings
Do not take any other medications or supplements within an hour of the time you plan to start taking GoLYTELY, as these medicines may not be fully absorbed into your body. Don’t use any other laxative products at the same time unless your doctor has given you permission to do so. Carefully follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the foods and drinks you can have the day before your colonoscopy. You should avoid all foods and drinks that have pulp or are red or purple in color.
