What is Osmoprep?
Prescription Osmoprep is given to patients before colonoscopies to allow devices to examine the colon effectively. Osmoprep contains sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate and sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous, which work by causing diarrhea.
How do I take Osmoprep?
On the evening of your colonoscopy you will take a total of 20 Osmoprep tablets. Take 4 Osmoprep tablets with at least 8 ounces of water every 15 minutes. On the day of your colonoscopy, you will take a total of 12 Osmoprep tablets, taking 4 tablets with 15 minutes in between each dose. Do not chew, break, or dissolve Osmoprep tablets, and make sure you drink plenty of clear fluids through the course of the treatment.
Before taking Osmoprep, tell your doctor if:
You have kidney problems
You have heart problems
You have a history of seizures
You have stomach or bowel problems
You have ulcerative colitis
You have problems with swallowing or gastric reflux
You drink alcohol or are withdrawing from alcohol use
You are on a low salt diet
You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
You are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
What are the possible side effects of taking Osmoprep?
Taking Osmoprep may cause symptoms like bloating, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. Monitor and report serious Osmoprep side effects to your doctor right away, especially if you experience an abnormal heart rate, seizures, or fainting.
What if I forget to take a dose of Osmoprep?
Take Osmoprep every 15 minutes or as prescribed by your doctor during your treatment period. If you forget to take Osmoprep, make sure you allow 15 minutes between each dose to prevent an overdose. Do not take more Osmoprep than is prescribed to you.
How do I store Osmoprep?
Store Osmoprep tablets in a room with a temperature around 59 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep Osmoprep away from children and extreme heat, moisture, or cold.
What happens if I overdose on Osmoprep?
You may experience extreme fatigue and thirst if you overdose on Osmoprep. Contact your doctor right away if you overdose, or call local emergency services at 911.
Warnings
