What is Movantik?
Movantik is an opioid antagonist, meaning that it blocks certain effects of opioid drugs. It is specifically used to treat constipation caused by opiates without reducing the pain-relieving effects of these narcotic drugs.
How do I take Movantik?
Take the Movantik drug on an empty stomach once a day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Take it at least an hour before or two hours after your first meal. If you don’t notice your constipation improving within three days of taking this medication, contact your doctor.
Before taking Movantik, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements
- You have a stomach or intestinal disorder or blockage
- You have a hole in your stomach, intestines, or esophagus
- You have stomach or colorectal cancer
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Movantik?
Movantik may cause upset stomach, diarrhea, gas, headache, nausea, or vomiting. If you have any of these side effects and they last a long time or get worse, inform your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe and persistent stomach or abdominal pain, excess sweating, chills, or unusual anxiety.
What if I forget to take a dose of Movantik?
Take the missed dose on an empty stomach as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and get back to your regular dosing schedule.
How do I store Movantik?
Store Movantik at room temperature, out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Keep it away from light and moisture. If your medication has expired or you no longer need it, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on Movantik?
Overdosing on the Movantik drug may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and other adverse gastrointestinal effects. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as these products can interact with Movantik and cause certain side effects. Do not take any laxatives while taking Movantik unless your doctor has given you permission to do so. If you stop taking your opioid medication, you will need to stop taking Movantik as well.
