Xiidra Information:
Xiidra is an eye drop in a new class of LFA-1 antagonists designed specifically to treat symptoms of dry eye disease. It works by blocking certain proteins that causes your eyes to either not produce tears or to produce incorrect tears.
Xiidra is taken as an eye drop according to your doctor’s instructions. It is usually given as one drop in each eye twice per day. Wash your hands before use. Tilt your head back slightly and pull your lower eyelid down enough to make a small pocket. Hold the dropper above your eye with the tip down. Look away and upward and squeeze out one drop. Next, close your eyes for two to three minutes with your head down slightly, with no blinking or squinting. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye for around one minute to prevent the liquid from escaping.
Before using Xiidra, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
- You are breastfeeding
- You have any food or drug allergies
- You are using any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements
Common side effects of Xiidra include blurred vision, eye irritation, or unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth. Stop using the medicine and call your doctor if you experience more serious side effects, such as vision problems or severe eye redness or irritation.
If you miss a dose of your eye drops, take the dose as soon as you remember. You may skip it if it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not use extra drops to make up for lost medication.
Keep this medication at room temperature away from any moisture or heat sources and excessive light.
Overdosing on this medication is not expected to be dangerous. As a precaution, however, seek medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222, especially if someone has swallowed some of the Xiidra solution.
It is unlikely that Xiidra will interact with other drugs. The most important warnings are regarding taking the drug while pregnant or breastfeeding, as the effects are unknown. Consult your doctor to see if other medications you take may interact with Xiidra.
Xiidra is the brand name for lifitegrast and is only available in this brand name form. As it is the first in its class, there are no drugs that work in a similar manner at this time. Other prescription eye drops that work in a different manner include Restasis, which is the most common eye drop used for this purpose. Talk to your doctor about which eye drop will work best for your dry eye condition.
