What is Nulytely?

 

Nulytely is brand name laxative that is used to empty the colon before a colonoscopy or barium enema. This is done so that the doctor may have a clear view of the the walls of the colon. This medication works by causing the patient to have watery diarrhea so that stool will easily and quickly empty from the colon.

How do I use Nulytely?

 

Nulytely comes as a powder to be mixed with water to create a solution to be taken orally. This solution is sometimes given to patients through a nasogastric tube if they are not able to take it orally.

 

This medication is typically taken the evening before and/or the morning of the procedure in  either in one or two doses. Your doctor will instruct you on exactly how you should use this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions carefully for taking this medication. Patients are typically instructed to drink one 8 ounce glass of Nulytely solution every 10 to 15 minutes until they have liquid bowel movements that are clear of any solid material.

 

You may not eat any solid foods or drink any milk before and during use of this medication. You should only drink clear liquids during this time. Consult with your doctor about when you may begin to drink clear liquids only and which liquids are allowed.

 

It is important that you drink clear liquids while using this medication so that you do not become dehydrated during treatment.

 

This medication will cause you to have many bowel movements while you are using it. Make sure you are able to stay close to a toilet from the time you take the first dose until the time you leave for your colonoscopy or barium enema appointment.

• Precautions

Before using Nulytely, tell your doctor if:

 

• you are allergic to Nulytely or any other medications

• you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements

• you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

• you have a blockage in your intestine

• you have a hole in your stomach lining or intestine

• you have any condition that causes problems with emptying your stomach or intestine

• you have or have ever had an irregular heartbeat

• you have had a recent heart attack

• you have chest pain, heart failure, an enlarged heart, or seizures

• you have acid reflux or inflammatory bowel disease

• you have low levels of potassium, magnesium, sodium, or calcium in your blood

 

Additional precautions:

 

• do not take any other laxatives during your treatment with this medication

• if you are taking any other medications orally, take them at least 1 hour before you begin your treatment with Nulytely

What are the possible side effects of using Nulytely?

 

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

• nausea

• bloating, stomach pain, stomach cramps

• Irritation in the rectal area

• weakness

• heartburn

• thirst or hunger

• chills

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

• rash, hives, or itching

• breathing difficulties

• difficulty swallowing

• swelling

• headache or dizziness

• vomiting

• irregular heartbeat

• seizures

• decreased urination

Contact your doctor if you forgot to take this medication or if you are not able to take this medication as directed.

• Storage

How do I store Nulytely?

 

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Store the mixed solution in the refrigerator and use it within 48 hours. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.
